Say Hello to Simplicity: Reinventing How You Add Sites to WordPress.com

Houston, We Have a Problem

Let’s face it – starting a new website should be exciting, not confusing! But currently, when you click that innocent-looking “Add new site” button on WordPress.com, you’re hit with a barrage of choices that might make your head spin faster than a fidget spinner in a tornado.

You’re faced with four options that read a bit like technical documentation rather than friendly guidance:

  • Start a new site on WordPress.com
  • Install Jetpack plugin
  • Migrate a site
  • Import a site

Is it just me, or does anyone else need a digital dictionary and a cup of coffee to decode these options?

A Fresh Splash of Simplicity

What if we made this whole experience as easy as choosing between chocolate and vanilla ice cream? (Both excellent choices, by the way!)

Here’s our proposed makeover that turns “tech speak” into “human speak”:

Step 1: The Big Question

When you click “Add new site,” you’ll see just TWO friendly options:

  1. Create something shiny and new
Got a brilliant idea? Let’s build your dream site from scratch!
  2. Bring your existing site to the party 🎉
Already have a site? Let’s get it connected to the WordPress.com family!

Step 2: The Follow-Up (only if you’re bringing an existing site)

If you choose “Bring your existing site to the party,” you’ll see:

  1. Add superpowers to your existing WordPress site 💪
Keep your site where it is and sprinkle it with WordPress.com magic!
  2. Make WordPress.com your site’s forever home 🏡
Move your WordPress site completely to our cozy neighborhood!
  3. Bring content from another platform 🚚
Saying goodbye to Wix, Squarespace, or Blogger? We’ll help you pack and move!

Why This Rocks for Everyone

For Users:

  • Brain-friendly choices: Two options beats four in the “what do I need to process?” Olympics
  • Normal human language: We speak your language, not robot-ese
  • Decision-making on easy mode: Clear paths based on what you actually want to do
  • Less tech jargon: Because nobody should need an engineering degree to start a website

For WordPress.com:

  • Higher conversion rates: Less confusion means fewer abandoned sign-ups
  • Reduced support tickets: Clear guidance = fewer “help me, I’m lost!” messages
  • Stronger first impression: Show users from day one that we value simplicity and clarity
  • Better user satisfaction: Happy users tell friends (and leave nice reviews!)

The Magic of Progressive Disclosure ✨

What we’re doing here is embracing the UX principle of progressive disclosure – revealing information only when it’s needed. It’s like having a conversation rather than handing someone an instruction manual.

Instead of overwhelming users with all possible technical scenarios upfront, we’re asking: “What are you trying to accomplish?” Then we guide them down the appropriate path with friendly, conversational prompts.

Your Turn!

Brilliant! UX writing is an art, and you are offering some subtle masterpieces here!

I would add some prompts to move your content from non-website platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Create a journey of freedom from walled gardens. WordPress.com is the new, forever home for your content, designed the way you want it.
