WordPress governed the world. It had started on the internet, where people once praised it for helping them make things. Now its rules applied everywhere.
Color was forbidden. So were public displays of emotion. Clothes had to be plain, buildings white and identical. Every street looked like the last.
Kai had grown up in this world. They spent their days in a small apartment, writing code for the WordPress government and checking that digital content followed the rules. They knew how to build things but were paid to keep everything the same.
At night, Kai visited encrypted archives of the old internet. There were colorful websites and people arguing passionately about things. Kai kept going back, though looking at any of it was forbidden.
Surveillance drones shaped like minimalist logos watched the streets. A trace of color in someone’s clothes or an unguarded smile could get them sent for reconditioning. People said you came back without a personality.
Then Kai met Alex, a graphic designer who had hidden a flower garden in the industrial part of the city. Kai had never seen anything like it. Alex laughed out loud, too.
They wanted other people to see the colors and know what they were missing. But the drones were everywhere, and they had no safe way to show anyone.
They tried broadcasting a manifesto through the city’s mainframe. For a moment, the screens filled with color. Then the enforcers shut it down and took Kai and Alex away. Nobody knew what happened to them.
WordPress tightened its controls. People whispered about the broadcast for a while, then stopped.
Nothing changed. The buildings stayed white. WordPress kept running.
