AI Website Tools Are Solving the Wrong Problem

You’ve seen the ads. “Build a stunning website in minutes with AI!” they promise. “Our intelligent design system will pick the perfect colors for your brand!” “Revolutionary AI chooses fonts that convert!”

So you sign up, excited. You’re finally going to get that website done.

Twenty minutes later, you’ve got a gorgeous template. The AI picked a lovely shade of blue. The fonts are perfectly paired. Your site looks professional and polished.

Then you click on the “About Us” page and stare at the blinking cursor.

And stare.

And stare some more.

Three hours later, you’ve written “We are a company that…” twelve different ways, deleted them all, and closed your laptop in defeat. Sound familiar?

The Time Breakdown Nobody Talks About

Here’s what actually happens when you build a website on Squarespace, Wix, or any modern platform:

Writing content: 60-70% of your time

  • What do I say about my business?
  • How do I describe my services without sounding boring?
  • What goes on the About page?
  • How do I write product descriptions that don’t suck?

Organizing & structuring content: 15-20% of your time

  • What pages do I actually need?
  • How should my navigation work?
  • In what order should I present things?
  • How do I organize this mountain of information?

Choosing & customizing templates: 8-12% of your time

  • Browsing templates
  • Picking one that fits your content
  • Making basic layout adjustments

Finding/creating images: 5-8% of your time

  • Photos, graphics, logos
  • Making sure everything looks cohesive

Visual tweaks: 3-5% of your time

  • Adjusting colors
  • Tweaking fonts
  • Minor styling changes

Notice something? The thing that takes up 70% of your time—writing and organizing content—gets almost zero attention from AI tools. But that last 3%? That’s where every “revolutionary AI website builder” focuses their energy.

We’re Solving a Problem That Doesn’t Exist

Nobody—and I mean nobody—has ever said, “I love my business, I know exactly what I want to say about it, I’ve got my content organized perfectly, but I just can’t figure out if my buttons should be blue or teal.”

That’s not why websites go unfinished.

Websites go unfinished because:

  • You don’t know how to explain what makes your business special
  • You can’t figure out how to sound professional without being boring
  • You have seventeen different things you want to say but no idea how to organize them
  • You write something, read it back, and think “this sounds terrible”
  • You get paralyzed by blank page syndrome

The cruel irony? AI is actually fantastic at helping with writing and content strategy. ChatGPT can help you brainstorm copy, organize your thoughts, and write in different tones. It can help you structure your information and figure out what pages you need.

But instead of tools that help with the 70% problem, we get yet another color palette generator.

What AI Website Tools Should Actually Do

Imagine if AI website builders focused on the real bottlenecks:

Content Strategy Assistant: “Based on your business type, here are the key messages you should communicate and the best order to present them.”

Writing Partner: “I notice your About page is generic. Let me ask you some questions to help you tell your unique story.”

Content Organization: “You have a lot of information. Let me suggest how to group this into pages and what your navigation should look like.”

Copy Enhancement: “This paragraph is factually correct but boring. Here are three ways to make it more engaging.”

These are the tools that would actually help people finish their websites. These are the problems AI could solve brilliantly.

Instead, we get tools that spend their engineering budget on marginally better color suggestions.

The Real Solution

The next time you see an AI website tool advertising “intelligent design” or “smart color selection,” ask yourself: is this solving the problem that actually stops me from finishing my website?

If you’re like most people, the answer is no. You don’t need AI to pick your colors. You need help figuring out what to say and how to say it.

The good news? You don’t have to wait for someone to build the right tool. The AI assistants that can help with content strategy and writing already exist. You just have to ask them the right questions.

Your website doesn’t need perfect colors. It needs words that actually explain why someone should care about your business.

Maybe it’s time we started solving for that instead.
