My grandmother passed away recently, and we were quite close. A friend of mine said I should do something to honor her. That sounded like a fantastic idea, and I decided to start small and very close to home (my parents’ backyard).

This has been something I’ve wanted to do for years, and it seemed like so much fun, but I never got around to it. Now, I had a very good reason. In the back of my parents’ house is a little community park and bike trail. The whole neighborhood uses it to walk their dogs, fly kites, or whatever people do outside. That is where I built my free little library.

If you look around the little library, you’ll see why I decided to put it here. Those are the last flowers my grandma ever planted. I thought it would be fun to not only provide a little service to the community but to do it in a place where they’d see her flowers. It has a little plaque on it letting people know that I put this up in honor of Grandma & Grandpa Fillbach and Grandma & Grandpa Hamze. Eventually, I’m going to build a site with a QR code so people can learn more about them.

If you’ve never heard of the Little Free Library non-profit (their site runs on WordPress too), you should really check them out. They do great work, and there is nothing more important in my life than reading. I hope I can do my little part to promote reading in my neighborhood.
